Last week at Chiltern Academy in Luton, thirty Year 10 students who weren’t able to secure traditional work experience placements took part in a live business challenge through Working Options instead.
Working with Walker Agency, we delivered a week-long creative industries project that gave students real-world business experience.
The Challenge
Students worked on a live client project to create a video for a marketing campaign for a product, using the same processes that professional creative agencies use. They learned to decode briefs, develop strategies, present ideas, and incorporate feedback – all skills that extend far beyond creative industries into any future career path. Many discovered roles they didn’t know existed, from account management to creative strategy.
“It was really interesting to see who responded to the brief the most,” observed Emma Torok, Account Manager at Walker Agency. “After speaking to some of the teachers, it seemed to be some of the students who weren’t as engaged in traditional classroom-based lessons.”
Student Progress
The progression was clear during the week. Students who were initially quiet during early presentations built confidence presenting to the industry professionals and engaged more once they started working in their groups. For many, this was their first direct contact with people working in creative industries.
The work produced was good quality. It was great! Walker Agency said many of the final videos could have been presented directly to their client.
Results
“Thank you again for arranging this fantastic opportunity and having the faith and flexibility to trial this as a Work Experience model,” said Zoe Walker, Careers Leader at Chiltern Academy.
In-person work experience remains the gold standard for young people to understand the world of work. But this approach worked well where traditional placements aren’t possible. It provided structured learning, direct contact with industry professionals, and helped students see themselves in career paths they hadn’t previously considered.
We create pathways between education and employment, ensuring every young person have the opportunity to develop their potential. If you would like to get involved in supporting young people, contact our Chief Executive, here.
