Very few young people know exactly what job they want to do, so you’re definitely not alone if you’re not sure. Many people change their jobs several times throughout their career anyway, so even if you start out in one job, you might not be doing the same kind of job when you get to retirement age.
There are many different ways to find out about jobs and what they involve. You could take a look at online recruitment sites, check out job adverts on company websites, speak to friends and relatives about their job, take up opportunities to gain work experience or an internship, attend career sessions with employers if your college arranges these. (Ask your college to get in touch with Working Options to discuss to getting speakers into your college from the food, drink and retail industry.)
If you’d like to find out more about the jobs that might be right for you, why not do the National Careers Service’s Skills Health Check. It’s all online and is designed to help you explore your skills, interests and what motivates you. The Skills Health Check is a set of quizzes and activities (all online) and you can download your personalised report once you’ve completed at least one assessment.
Who knows, it might throw up some jobs you’ve never even heard or thought of….
