The fantastic team at Equistone are limbering up to take on a 25km trek on 14 September, over 8 hours, to conquer the Peak District Challenge.

Their purpose? To raise funds in support of our impactful work with young people. As their Charity of the Year 2023, we wanted to support their huge team effort by sharing some tips for taking on those 30976 steps:

The weather report
Given the capricious nature of the Great British Summertime, expect unpredictable weather in the Peak District. Come prepared with versatile layers, a reliable waterproof jacket, and perhaps even waterproof trousers. Don’t forget the essentials: sun lotion, a hat, and sunglasses, so you can be ready for ‘all the weathers’.

It’s all about the footwear
Your choice of footwear is paramount. Opt for well-fitting, high-quality, waterproof hiking boots with a decent grip. Not forgetting to pair them with comfy socks – think cotton over wool in September.

Don’t get lost!
While the paths in the Peak District are often well-marked, prudent navigation is a must. Plan your route meticulously, and though GPS devices and smartphones help, don’t solely rely on them. Bring along a trusty map and compass, honing your traditional navigation skills just in case your 4G dips out.

Drink up
Bring plenty of water, especially if it’s a warm day, as there aren’t many places to refill along most routes.

It is in the bag
A well-equipped backpack is your ally on this journey. Remember to pack essentials like an emergency whistle, lots of tasty and energy boosting food, and a first-aid kit with plenty of sticky plasters for those inevitable blisters.

Environment awareness
Embrace encounters with the local fauna, and be prepared to cross paths with sheep and cattle, as the Peak District is a working rural area. Stick to paths to prevent erosion, take all your waste home with you, and follow the Countryside Code.

Strategic parking
Some areas can be quite busy, especially in good weather. So, try to arrive early and consider using public transport or lift sharing, where you can.

Embarking on the Peak District Challenge is more than a physical feat – it’s a journey that reflects the determination and spirit needed to surmount any challenge. Equistone’s team are undertaking this endeavour all in support of helping young people around the country to have their chance to flourish in the world of work – fitting with our mantra that you can achieve anything if you work hard and put your mind to it.

We wish them the best of luck (and hope the blister tally stays low).
