We’ve got some really exciting news to share: Carwyn Jones, former First Minister of Wales, has joined Working Options as our Strategic Advisor.

As we expand our work across Wales, having Carwyn’s experience and insight to guide us is going to make a real difference to the impact we can have.

What Carwyn Will Be Doing
Carwyn will be helping us identify where opportunities are emerging across Wales and building partnerships with employers, schools, and policymakers. He’ll oversee our expansion into priority regions and make sure we’re staying ahead of where industries are heading.

But here’s what we’re particularly pleased about – Carwyn won’t just be working behind the scenes. He’ll be getting into schools across Wales himself, delivering Insight Sessions directly with students.

Lord Jones of Penybont said: “I was fortunate as a state school boy from Bridgend to be taught to believe I could achieve anything when given access to the right opportunities. That belief took me from my local comprehensive to becoming First Minister of my country. Great work is already being done – the Welsh curriculum embeds skills and careers across learning, and there are many excellent initiatives supporting young people. I want to help build on that work by connecting students directly with industry and real opportunities. Working Options enhances what’s already happening by giving young people practical experience of the workplace and helping them see how their learning connects to their future careers.”

Sue Maskrey, our Chief Executive, said: “Carwyn’s appointment comes at a pivotal moment for our work in Wales. With his guidance on industry partnerships and emerging sectors, we can build on the excellent foundation work already happening in Welsh schools and communities, connecting even more young Welsh people with the opportunities they need to succeed in their chosen careers.”

Since launching in Wales in 2024, we’ve reached over 15,000 young people in state secondary schools, and the response from both students and Welsh businesses has been fantastic. With Carwyn’s guidance, we’re ready to scale up and connect even more young people in Wales with real career opportunities.
